Installing PostgreSQL and Initial Setup

Database Persistence#

Lots of software applications need the ability to create, read, update and delete data and be able to permanently store that data. This is known as persistence.

Persistence is typically achieved in an application by storing files on disk or in a database such as a relational or NoSQL database. For our School Lunch application, we are using PostgreSQL, which is a tried and tested, open-source relational database.

Many cloud providers offer hosted Postgres databases, but for now, we'll install Postgres locally for our local dev environment.

Installing Postgres Locally#

Head over to Enterprise DB's website at https://www.enterprisedb.com/downloads/postgres-postgresql-downloads and download the appropriate installer for your operating system.

Once the download completes, run the installer, accepting the defaults. You'll need to set a superuser password during the install process. Make sure you can remember the password you choose or write it down in a safe location.
